In design I tend to lean away from the traditional and toward the creative. I pull an idea from my experience, from stories, songs, nature, people and other artists such as Gaudi and Mucha. Then I draw and figure, trying to create a design that will maximize the beautiful qualities of steel. I am not always successful, but when I am it is exhilarating. Once I have settled on a design I turn my focus to craftsmanship. With careful attention to detail, I ensure that all of my pieces will appeal to the eye, the hand and hopefully the heart.
I majored in Industrial Arts at Humboldt State University with an emphasis in woodworking furniture and construction. I have studied drawing, watercolor and oil painting and ceramics. Ten years ago I discovered Blacksmithing and it has become a passion for me.I have completed class 2 and am in the process of becoming a Journeyman with the California Blacksmith Association. I worked as a Blacksmith for 4 years at a local gate and railing fabrication shop and then in 2006 started my own business. I own a shop in Ettersburg, California called Black Hand Forge where I can be found, almost every day, happily hammering away.
